This summer, the success of four medical education meetings in California depended on the performance of Christina Freiler ’07 (Chatham, N.J.).
She served an internship at Educational Concepts in Medicine (ECM) based in Parsippany, N.J, a company that produces educational materials for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care practitioners. Tara Larkin ’97 arranged the experience and was Freiler’s supervisor.
“I have been given a lot of responsibility, but at the same time, a lot of direction,” says Freiler, an international affairs major. “Not only have I learned a lot about the medical education field, but also how to deal with different people on a day-to-day basis. I have gained practical experience which I will be able to utilize in any career setting.”
Freiler supported a team of eight program managers and directors, including Larkin. She met with each program manager biweekly to assemble status reports documenting accomplished tasks and future actions. Her status reports were presented at each program manager meeting.
She also managed the logistical arrangements for four educational meetings in California where members of the Respiratory and Allergic Disease Foundation presented information about ECM’s series on long-acting beta-agonists. The direct contact for the meeting venues, Freiler organized all audiovisual needs, completed venue contracts, and mailed invitations to thousands of practitioners in the field.
“The four meetings, where a physician who is a key opinion leader in the field of allergy and immunology spoke, were successful as a result of Christina’s hard work, organization, and attention to detail,” says Larkin.
Freiler has sharpened her time management, teamwork, and leadership skills through her work with ECM. She is grateful she had the opportunity to work with a supportive team and mentor.
“Working with Tara has been a great experience,” she says. “Not only has she taught me a lot about her industry, but she has warmly welcomed me into the company. I have worked one-on-one with her on several projects, and I have learned a lot throughout the process. She is always ready to answer any questions I may have, and we have developed a great relationship over the summer. The same holds true for the other members of the company, all of whom I have genuinely enjoyed working with.”
Larkin also was pleased with the quality of Freiler’s work and how quickly she became acclimated to ECM’s working environment.
“Christina has been an excellent addition to our team,” she says. “She is intelligent, patient, organized, and efficient with her time, which have been a great help to our company. ECM is a small, close-knit group, and Christina fit in and jumped right into many projects. [She] will be successful in whatever career she pursues. Any company will be lucky to have her on its team.”
Freiler has served externships at Investec Group and Pfizer, Inc. She is president of the International Affairs Club and member of Sigma Iota Rho, the international affairs honor society. She also is a tour guide for the admissions office.
