Members of the Class of 2010 officially began their college careers today with the Convocation opening Lafayette’s 175th academic year.
The Convocation was part of New Student Orientation, during which students are continuing, through Sunday, an exploration of human security, civil society, and liberal learning and being introduced to Lafayette’s intellectual and academic life. Classes for new and returning students begin Monday, Aug. 28.
Among those addressing students, parents, faculty, and staff gathered on the Quad were President Dan Weiss and Ping Chong, the acclaimed theater artist, who delivered the Convocation address.
“We celebrate your arrival. Nothing revitalizes the campus as much as the presence of the new students,” Weiss said. “It’s a momentous day, a milestone in your lives, not only because you’re joining the College but because you’re beginning a new chapter in your lives: your career as serious learners is about to begin. For that reason, it is one of the most important days of your lives. (Click here for the complete text of Weiss’ remarks.)
Provost Anthony M. Cummings formally presented the class of 630 students, and Weiss declared their matriculation.
Among Chong’s themes were acceptance of others and making connections. He told students that how they spend their time at Lafayette will shape their views on their culture, and they should do their best to become “true future heroes.” (Click here for the complete text of Chong’s remarks.)
