A planning meeting for students wishing to present at the upcoming National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) will be held 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in Jaqua Auditorium, room 103, Hugel Science Center. (The location was originally announced as Hugel Center’s Gagnon Lecture Hall, room 100.)
Now in its 21st year, NCUR provides some 2,200 undergraduates from more than 250 colleges and universities an avenue to present research running the full spectrum of academic disciplines. It is the largest conference dedicated solely to undergraduate research in the nation.
Last April, 40 Lafayette students were invited to present at NCUR 2006 held at University of North Carolina in Asheville. During Lafayette’s 19 years of participation, more than 500 students have been accepted to present research, with an average of more than 30 students per year over the last decade.
NCUR 2007 will be held April 12-14, 2007, at the Dominican University of California in San Rafael.
At the planning meeting, students will learn about the application process, possible funding, and transportation. The College covers registration, travel, and lodging expenses for students whose abstracts are accepted for presentation at the conference. Students normally are expected to pay for their own meals.
Students who would like present at NCUR 2007 must email the following information to John E. Meier, professor of mathematics and director of research services, and June Thompson, coordinator of pre-professional and scholars programs, by Nov. 3:
- Student name and e-mail address
- Name of the faculty mentor
- Proposed title and abstract to be submitted to NCUR
- If the student has previously presented at a professional conference
Online abstract submission forms can be found on the NCUR website.
Lafayette’s Academic Research Committee will review the submitted abstracts and will inform all applicants if they will be receiving travel support by Nov. 20. All students who are going to NCUR 2007 must also submit directly to NCUR by Dec. 1.
Students whose abstracts have been accepted for presentation at the conference may also apply to have their papers published in the conference proceedings.
