The Master Printmakers/Master Artists Portfolio exhibition, which is part of the Experimental Printmaking Institute’s (EPI) 10th anniversary celebration, will run in the Williams Center Galley (room 108) until Dec. 8.
Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday; 2-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and noon-5 p.m. the first Sunday of each month for First Weekend Easton.
Curlee Raven Holton, professor and head of art and founding director of EPI, explains that the role of the printmaker was diminished in the commercial process of making art available in the marketplace. The goals of the exhibition are to emphasize that the printmaker is an equal partner with the artist and to celebrate the tradition of collaboration between artists and printmakers.
“Printmakers are artists themselves and that is obscured in the marketplace,” says Holton. “I wanted to reposition the printmaker in the primary role of art maker as well. As a result, the works created are very dynamic and broader in their result because of this equal collaboration.”
Funded by the Pittsburgh Foundation, the project began with four artists and four printmakers. The foundation was so pleased with the results that, for the first time in its history, it asked EPI to repeat the process. Completed over two years, 2003-04, the works in the exhibit were created by eight artists and eight printmakers.
Internationally renowned artists who participated include Emma Amos, Richard Anuszkiewicz, David C. Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Grace Hartigan, Bodo Korsig, Faith Ringgold, and Kay WalkingStick. Master printmakers, who came from workshops in Pennsylvania, Maryland, England, and Japan, include Robert Beckman and Ian Short, Wayne Crothers, John E. Dowell, Jr., Allan Edmunds, Holton, Quentin Mosley, John Phillips, and Jean Paul Russell.
In connection with EPI’s anniversary festivities, Skillman Library is showing Books at the EPI-center in the Simon Room through the end of December. Library hours are 8:30 a.m.-1 a.m. Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, and noon-1 a.m. Sunday.
The Allentown Art Museum also is showing Innovation and Creativity in Printmaking: Selections from the Archives of the Experimental Printmaking Institute until Feb. 4, 2007 in the Payne Hurd Gallery. Holton will deliver a gallery talk noon, Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the museum.
