Donald Asher, known as “America’s Job Search Guru” will present two different lectures on campus Monday, Nov. 13.

“Strategies for Admission into the Graduate School of your Choice” will be noon in Oechsle Hall room 224. Students will learn strategies for gaining admission to the most competitive academic and pre-professional programs in the nation. Lunch will be provided.

“Career Launch for Liberal Arts Students” will be 7 p.m. in Oechsle Hall room 224. Students will learn how to market their unique Lafayette liberal arts education to employers as well as learn which liberal arts skills will be the most marketable. Dessert will be provided.

Both programs are free and open to students of all class years and majors. No pre-registration is required. Asher’s programs are cosponsored by Career Services and the Dean of Studies Office.

“Mr. Asher has a unique understanding and appreciation for the skills developed by liberal arts students while in college,” says Rachel Nelson Moeller ’88, associate director of career services. “He recognizes that these students need guidance in how to market these skills to both employers and graduate schools and provides this advice in an engaging and entertaining way. His expertise in both graduate school and liberal arts areas is perfectly targeted towards Lafayette students.”

Asheris the author of nine books on career development issues, including How to Get Any Job with Any Major, Asher’s Bible of Executive Resumes, The Overnight Resume, From College to Career, and Graduate Admissions Essays. He is also a contributor to WSJ online at CareerJournal.com and CollegeJournal.com, NACE Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, jobstar.org, and monstertrak.com.

He is well known to career services staff nationwide as a speaker and consultant on hidden job market and self-directed search issues. He is the keynote speaker for the Career Development Series of national teleconferences sponsored by the University of Tennessee. He presents at over 100 colleges and universities annually.

“Students should gather career-related information from a wide variety of sources, including Career Services, Lafayette alumni, faculty, family, friends, reference books, and websites,” says Moeller. “Attending speaker events such as these is an important part of this process and provides students with valuable information that may not be available elsewhere.”

Along with the Asher lectures, Career Services offers a variety of special programs both on and off campus for students to gain valuable career-related information. They will be offering networking nights over the January interim, as well as a full calendar of events in the spring.

Networking nights will be held in Philadelphia on Jan. 16 and in New York City on Jan. 18. Additional information, including times and locations, will be available later this month.
