Six students taking piano, flute, and vocal lessons with music department instructors will perform a recital noon Wednesday, Dec. 6 in the Williams Center for the Arts room 123. The event is free and open to the public.
Pianist Sean Gough ’09 (North Plainfield, N.J.), a history major, will play the first movement of Mozart’s “Piano Sonata in A Minor” and “Crystal Silence” by jazz pianist Chick Corea. He also will be a featured soloist in Jazz Combo’s fall concert Dec. 4.
“Playing an instrument is like any other genuine interest or love – the time and personal involvement it demands are not ends in themselves, but paths to enlightenment,” he says. “Whether it is practicing a technique, studying a great work, or transcending the notes to convey a feeling, the core value of these challenges is that a confrontation with one’s own limitations, an interaction with new ideas and situations, and an engagement of body and soul, must take place. So even when I don’t fulfill the musical expectations, I always learn something about myself.”
For Marquis Scholar Elina Stelman ’10 (Trumball, Conn.), playing the flute provides a balance to her rigorous academic schedule. She will perform “Fantasy in A Minor” by Georg Philipp Telemann.
“[Music] gives me a chance to focus on something other than schoolwork – something in which I know I can be successful if I work hard enough,” she says.
Joining Gough and Stelman in recital will be Trustee Scholar and economics and business majorJessica Bigness ’07 (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) on piano, Shin Hwang ’10 (Ann Arbor, Mich.) on piano, Marquis Scholar and English and music double major Megan Kunkelman ’07 (Narvon, Pa.) on piano, and history major Paul Sommers ’09 (Wenonah, N.J.) on vocals.
