Writing Organization Reaching Dynamic Students (W.O.R.D.S.) will hold its final performance of the semester 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 in the Landis Atrium of Farinon College Center.
“W.O.R.D.S. of Mouth” will be a collection of performance art including poetry, rap, dance, song, art, and comedy. Unlike previous W.O.R.D.S. events, it is not an open mic night. The pieces have been rehearsed, with students working on them throughout the past few weeks. The event will focus on collaboration and mixing genres, and will showcase the creative spirits of W.O.R.D.S. members.
Danielle Bero ’07 (Astoria, N.Y.), who designed her own interdisciplinary studies major in creative mediums and social justice, says that diversity is the theme that keeps surfacing.
“This is a diverse group of people, styles, and material,” she says. “It is important that students come together outside of the classroom to attack social issues and express their creative spirits.”
W.O.R.D.S., which is now in its second year, was founded by Bero and Alberto Luna ’08 (Bronx, N.Y.), an English and psychology double major, to encourage discussion and the expression of ideas outside the classroom.
The group provides a creative outlet that incorporates poetry, music, and art into an intellectually stimulating environment where its members can discuss political, moral, and social issues.
Some events W.O.R.D.S. has been a part of are World AIDS Open Mic Cafe, the Aftermath charity exhibition held by Foundation for the Awareness and Alleviation of Poverty, Take Back the Night, pre-inaugural activities, Block pARTy, and the Consciousness Conference Weekend.
