In the art department’s second annual student self portrait competition, which is open to all studio classes, art major Elysia Brennan ’08 (Mount Pocono, Pa.) won top prize of $150 for her oil painting.
Economics and business major Jonathan Hurt ’07(St. Louis, Mo.) earned the $100 second prize for his video. Catherine Miervaldis ’07 (Basking Ridge, N.J.), a double major in art and economics & business, received the $50 third prize for her video.
President Dan Weiss served as the juror for the competition, selecting the three finalists.
“[Weiss] is a member of the department and loves art,” says event organizer Curlee Raven Holton, professor and head of art. “He has a good eye for talent, and the students are honored that he chose to do this.”
Works by all the students who participated will be on view in the Williams Visual Arts Building, 243 North Third Street, through Jan. 2, 2007.
Holton believes the competition allows students the opportunity to experience healthy competition, recognize their achievements, and show each other their work. It also allows the department to promote the talent of its students.
“Our students do not traditionally come to Lafayette to seek a career as an artist,” he says. “But we are committed as a department to support their talent and development to insure that they are competitive if they choose to pursue a career professionally.”
