A new publication will give the College community an additional creative outlet, says its editor-in-chief, Cole Hauptfuhrer ’07.

The Monsieur, an electronic publication that goes live today, “will provide all members of the College community – whether faculty, alumni, or students – with a forum in which they can publish anything they write or draw, so long as it’s well-done and interesting,” says Hauptfuhrer, an English major from Bronxville, N.Y. “Not only are we not scared of being a little subversive, but we’re looking forward to it,” he adds.

The debut issue has four main sections, The Harangue (opinion), The Scallion (satire), I-Joust (two people debating a topic), and Amusing Academia (“homework worthy of a public look”). Hauptfuhrer says the organization of future issues will reflect the number and types of submissions received, and so will the publication’s frequency – weekly or bi-weekly. “We want it to be shaped by the demands of the community,” Hauptfuhrer says.

The publication’s creators also include Andrew Pava ’07 (Newton, Mass.), Brandon Kurtzman ’07 (Charleston, S.C.), and Mark Svevar ’07 (Northvale, N.J.). Pava and Kurtzman, both American studies majors, are managing editors. Svevar, who is pursuing a B.S. in mechanical engineering and A.B. in international studies, the technical adviser, is in charge of the website.

Hauptfuhrer and Pava are receiving academic credit for developing the publication in an internship this semester under the auspices of the English department. Overseeing the department’s internship program is Deborah L. Byrd, associate professor of English.

“We’re hoping that all sectors of the Lafayette community will participate,” Hauptfuhrer says. “I’m looking to put out a high-quality complement to our student newspaper, with the aim of having it flourish after I graduate.”
