Forensics Society attended the Pi Kappa Delta (national forensics honorary society) National Tournament March 8-10, where Teevrat Garg ’10 (Haryana, India) was named the national champion in impromptu speaking.
The tournament, held at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich., included 54 colleges and universities from all over the country.
Garg placed first in impromptu speaking out of 127 competitors. He also placed seventh in extemporaneous speaking and received an excellence award in rhetorical criticism, which meant he placed in the top 10 percent.
For impromptu speaking, participants are given a quotation and have one minute to prepare a six minute speech. Garg’s final round quotation was from Albert Schweitzer, “Ideals are thoughts. So long as they exist merely as thoughts, the power in them remains ineffective.”
“The PKD National Tournament was the first national tournament I have attended and it was truly an invigorating experience with an overwhelming field in each and every event,” Garg says. “I am pleased with my performance in this tournament. It was a pleasant experience being named the national champion in impromptu speaking. My personal success, as well the success of our team, is the result of the unconditional commitment that our coaches Scott Placke[, director of forensics,] and John Boyer[, debate coach,] have made to the team.”
Ryan Benjamin ’10 (Bronx, N.Y.) and Anthony Romanoski ’10 (Etters, Pa.) also competed in the tournament.
Garg is a member of the International Student Organization, Foundation for the Awareness and Alleviation of Poverty, International Affairs Club, and Econ Club.
Forensic Society’s next tournament will be the National Forensic Association’s annual tournament April 19-23 at Berry College in Rome, Ga.
