Students in the Don Quixote course taught by Camille Qualtere, visiting instructor of foreign languages and literatures, will present an interactive, bilingual staging of Miguel Cervantes’ novel from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in Farinon College Center.
The production is part of the Americas day of the International Students Association’s (ISA) weeklong Extravaganza. It is sponsored by the department of foreign languages and literatures, the English department, the theater program, Hispanic Society of Lafayette (HSL), ISA, Friends of the Skillman Library, and Lafayette Intercultural Network Council (LINC).
Qualtere’s class, along with English and theater students and members of HSL, has been working with actors from Touchstone Theater of Bethlehem for the past few weeks to create and rehearse the performance.
The performance will fuse together current multicultural issues – such as bilingualism, women’s rights, and racial and ethnic discrimination – with the classical imagery and themes that are normally associated with Don Quixote. An eight-foot puppet of Cervantes and actor “plants” will move around the audience to encourage participation in the action.
Spanish students from several area high schools, as well as community children who work with the Landis Community Outreach Center’s numerous programs, have been invited to attend the presentation.
A Spanish-themed dinner and snacks will be available à la carte from 5-7 p.m. with prices ranging from $5 – $10. Seating will be informal.
