The McKelvy House Scholars invite the campus to join them in a dinner discussion exploring happiness on Sunday, April 22.

The meal of Thai food will begin at 6 p.m. at McKelvy House, 200 High Street. Art major Rachel Pidcock ’09 (Allentown, Pa.) andneuroscience major Sergey Toshinskiy ’08 (Obninsk Kaluga Regio, Russia) will lead the discussion at 6:30 p.m.

Pidcock and Toshinskiy will discuss happiness and how the pursuit of happiness unites people. They also will explore if people know what makes them happy and what determines the required conditions for a happy or unhappy continuum. They will investigate whether happiness is an unattainable goal that people look for their entire lives or if it is only a state of mind.

The objective of the discussion is to question the model of the happiness-trophy and to come up with constituents for the state of happiness, both causal and structural.

Since 1962, the McKelvy House Scholars program has brought together Lafayette students with a wide range of majors and interests to reside in a historic off-campus house and share in intellectual and social activities. Weekly Sunday, and occasional Wednesday, dinner discussions that engage students in debate and exchange of ideas are the hallmark of the program. Most members also contribute to the annual McKelvy Papers, written on a topic of each person’s choice. McKelvy Scholars participate in activities together such as field trips to plays, concerts, and exhibits, and sponsor events for the campus as well.
