Lafayette will hold a memorial service celebrating the life of Dan O’Neil ’06 4 p.m. Friday, May 4, in Colton Chapel. The service is being coordinated through the Office of Religious Life. O’Neil, who graduated last May with a B.S. in civil engineering, was one of 32 people killed at Virginia Tech on April 16.

Numerous members of the College community traveled to Lincoln, R.I., yesterday and over the weekend to attend funeral services.

The College has established the Daniel P. O’Neil ’06 Memorial Fund. Checks should be made to “Lafayette College” with “O’Neil Fund” in the memo field and mailed to Lafayette College, 307 Markle Hall, Easton, PA 18042. The area that the fund will support will be determined in consultation with his family. For more information, contact Deb Rhebergen ’03, assistant director of the annual fund, rhebergd@lafayette.edu, (610) 330-5013. Lafayette’s Arts Society sold buttons to benefit the memorial fund.

Those who wish to send cards or letters to be displayed at the Virginia Tech student center should address them to Julie Walter-Steele, 225 Squires Student Center (0138), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061.

Lafayette Christian Fellowship will hold a forum called “Do Ancient Scriptures Explain Modern Evil?” noon Friday in Interfaith Chapel, Hogg Hall. “Tragedies such as the recent shootings at Virginia Tech raise many troubling questions,” notes a LCF statement. “These questions include: Why is evil present in the world? What is the nature of evil? How should humans respond to evil and suffering? LCF seeks to provide a forum for exploration and discussion of the often-overlooked Biblical perspective on good, evil, life, death, suffering, and tragedy.”

A memorial fund has also been established in Rhode Island honoring O’Neil and friends plan to produce a CD of his music as a fundraiser. Twenty-five of his songs can be heard at his web site, www.residenthippy.com.
