The Reeder Fellows invite the campus community to discuss Greek life 4:15 p.m. Thursday, May 3 in the back room of Gilbert’s. Free snacks will be provided.

Biology major Caitlin Kelly ’07 (Cutchogue, N.Y) will lead the discussion on Greek life and its relationship with academics and racism.

“Greek life at Lafayette has been a hot topic of discussion for decades, and both Reeder and McKelvy have members affiliated with Greek organizations,” says Kelly. “Often, discussion of Greek life deals with preconceived notions of Greek social life and questions the usefulness of such organizations on campus. Rarely are the academic influences of these organizations understood and discussed by the unaffiliated. As both a Reeder Fellow and proud member of Alpha Gamma Delta [sorority], I find this topic particularly relevant to not only those involved with scholar or Greek organizations, but to the entire campus.”

Participants will discuss academic life within Greek organizations, including the standards to which each affiliated student is held and the ability of a Greek life to contribute positively to Lafayette’s intellectual environment. Discussion also will focus on the recent consideration of adding historically black fraternities and sororities to Lafayette.

Now in its second year as an off campus intellectual community, the Reeder Fellows program is experimenting with a new format. Reeder Fellows host events with professionals, visiting artists, college professors, and religious leaders.
