The experience Jennifer Ricciardi ’08 (East Hanover, N.J.) had during her externship may change the career path she takes. Ricciardi spent three days over the winter interim working with Michelle Beloff ’92, doctor of obstetrics and gynecology at theFairlawn Women’s Health Group in Fairlawn, N.J.

“I learned a lot of valuable information in the OB/GYN fields,” says Ricciardi, a neuroscience major. “A women’s health course I took last semester really interested me and, after this externship, I am certain that this is the field I want to be in. Before my externship, I never thought I would want to practice in this type of field. Now I am seriously thinking about becoming either a doctor or a physician’s assistant in the OB/GYN field.”

During her externship, Ricciardi participated in patient appointments, two Caesarean sections, and two circumcisions.

“Before each appointment, [Dr. Beloff] explained why the patient was here and also if the patient had a problem,” explains Ricciardi. “This allowed me to understand the science behind it. I felt as though I learned an incredible amount of information from her. She was very good at explaining concepts and ideas; all of my studying in classes came to life as she was explaining it.”

Ricciardi believes Beloff was a knowledgeable mentor. They also had fun talking about their Lafayette experiences.

“We discussed what life was like at Lafayette when she was there and found we had a lot in common,” says Ricciardi. “She also explained all the essentials of the practice to me as well as gave me knowledge that I can take with me when I leave Lafayette. I realized she is the same type of student that I am. She had to work hard for all her grades.”

Beloff was impressed with Ricciardi and believes the student has a bright future in the medical field.

“Jennifer is a super nice girl who was very interested [in this profession] and asked appropriate questions,” says Beloff. “If she is interested in this field as a career, I’m sure she will do well. It was great to have her here.”

Beloff enjoys participating in Lafayette’s externship program and giving students a glimpse into her profession. She also believes the students she hosts benefit her.

“It’s nice to have a student around; it allows us to become academic again and put things in perspective for us,” she says. “At the same time, we’re opening someone’s eyes to something they may want to do. Hosting an externship also lets us reflect and realize how far we have come.”

Ricciardi volunteers with the Art for the Young at Heart and Adopt a Grandparent programs through the Landis Community Outreach Center.
