Following alumni-sponsored externship, Katie Miervaldis ’07 enjoys opportunities as page at NBC
By Liz Margolis ’09
Katie Miervaldis ’07 is enjoying her work as a page in the NBC Page Program. After participating in an externship at NBC in January 2006 with William Wermuth ’98, she got a real taste of what kinds of opportunities the position could bring.
During her externship Miervaldis met many people in various positions and departments all over NBC, including news anchors Stone Phillips, Matt Laurer, and Brian Williams.
“It’s really what you make it,” she says. “You have every opportunity to make connections all over NBC. You really just have to take advantage of those opportunities.”
She says the biggest challenge she faces in her job is finding her place in NBC. She is excited to be able to work her way “up the ladder” and is enjoying the experience.
Lafayette has helped with her job in many ways. Her classes taught her to be organized, says the double major in art and economics and business, but one of the best skills she developed was how to socialize and network. Robert S. Mattison, Metzgar Professor of Art, impacted her through his passion for his field and she hopes to match that level of passion in what she pursues. She also learned much from Thomas Bruggink, professor of economics and business, she says, noting that one of the best things she did at Lafayette was getting to know her professors.
Miervaldis hopes to stay with NBC in the near future. Her ultimate goal is to be a producer for the Olympics and she hopes the connections she makes as a page will help her achieve this.
In her free time she enjoys meeting up with Lafayette friends, taking walks in Central Park, and wandering around New York City.
