As she faced graduation, Toni Ahrens ’05 knew that staying in touch with Lafayette would be difficult. When she stumbled upon the Alumni Online Community, she found a way to alleviate that problem.
“I joined the Alumni Online Community because it’s a great way to stay connected to what’s going on at Lafayette, and also to find out what’s going on in the lives of all the great people I knew at Lafayette,” says Ahrens, who majored in psychology and in English with a theater concentration.
As she explored the service more, it was the online directory she came to use and enjoy the most.
“Sometimes you want to surprise an old friend with a birthday card or just a note telling them you are thinking of them,” says Ahrens, a seventh-grade language arts teacher. “Having a directory to find their address is great.”
However, it isn’t just the features that make the online community exciting for Ahrens; it’s also the atmosphere created by its members.
“The community atmosphere is very supportive and also reminiscent,” she explains. “Lafayette is a small college where you didn’t have to know everyone personally to care about them.”
It’s this feeling of support for the entire Lafayette family, Ahrens says, that makes the online community important for all alumni.
“It is nice to read the great news from people you knew at Lafayette, but also those you may not have known very well,” says Ahrens. “The online community allows Lafayette alumni to remain in each others’ lives, even though we can’t all be in the same place anymore.”
