Summers’ career includes more than 20 years’ experience in sales, sales management, marketing, and executive search. In addition to his years at Wake Forest, he served in varying capacities for JER HR Group Inc., a Greensboro/Winston-Salem, N.C., human resources consulting firm.

“For decades, Mike has applied his considerable skills at various U.S. companies,” says Kim Spang, vice president of development and college relations. “That experience, as well as his most recent work in career services at Wake Forest, brings a well-rounded set of skills and knowledge to Lafayette. Mike is a perfect fit for our innovative Office of Career Services.”

In the Office of Career Services, Summers will extend work that has put innovation like the award-winning Gateway program—a four-year individualized career exploration plan—at students’ fingertips.

“One of my main goals is to ensure that every student has the support and guidance they need from career services to identify their first step after Lafayette, whether that be graduate school or an internship or full-time job,” Summers says. “I want the students, faculty, and staff to see career services as a partner to helping our students find their path. A second goal is to make sure we are investing in all the right areas to equip our students with the necessary tools and skills to navigate their transition from college to career.”

Lafayette appeals to Summers because of its “strong academic reputation and the commitment to putting students first,” he says. “The school’s long-term commitment to career services as students make the transition from college to career is a second reason.  A third reason– the people, the community and the passionate alumni who love Lafayette and want to support the students by offering their time and expertise.”

Summers’ experience includes human resources and recruiting work for Charles Aris Inc. and Bausch & Lomb. He obtained a B.A. from Wake Forest with a major in communications in 1987.

His first day at Lafayette is Aug. 14.
