SILAS ROBERT BEANE JR., a member of Lafayette’s Class of 1958, has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 1999. Before becoming a trustee, he was a member of the Lafayette Leadership Council from 1994 to 1999, serving as vice chair in 1998-99, in which capacity he was also a board associate. He was a member of the Alumni Council Executive Committee in 2003-04.
Beane served as vice chair of the New Jersey Regional Campaign during the Lafayette Leadership Campaign. He was co-chair of the Class of 1958’s 50th Reunion in 2008 and a member of the organizing committee for its 40th Reunion in 1998. He also has served as class fund manager.
In 1998, Beane and his son, Silas R. Beane III ’88, endowed one of Lafayette’s largest scholarship funds. The S. Robert ’58 and Silas R. ’88 Beane Scholarship Fund generates income each year to aid students of disadvantaged background who demonstrate financial need, with preference given to graduates of North Plainfield (N.J.) High School. The Beane Technology Studio in Skillman Library also is named in recognition of the support of Bob and Silas Beane. Father and son were inducted together into the Societe d’Honneur in 1999.
The recipient of a bachelor of science degree in economics and business from Lafayette, Beane retired in 1997 as senior vice president, partner, and director of Johnson & Higgins after assisting with the transition following the sale of that firm to Marsh & McLennan. Affiliated with Johnson & Higgins since 1967, he held various positions with the company, including extended overseas assignments in Madrid and Milan. He was a director of Johnson & Higgins from 1987 to 1997 and finished his career as senior international director.
Following graduation, Beane served in the U.S. Army Reserve, rising to the rank of captain. He is a former director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy and a former trustee of the school boards of the American School of Madrid and the American School of Milan.
GEORGE FRANKLIN RUBIN, a member of Lafayette’s Class of 1964, has served on the Board of Trustees since 1989. Since 2001, he has been chair of the board’s Committee on Grounds and Buildings and a member of the Executive Committee. He also is a member of the board’s special committees on Easton and information technology.
Rubin served on the board’s Ad Hoc Committee on Selectivity and Special Committee on the Hotel Easton. Before becoming a trustee, he was an alumni associate on the Grounds and Buildings Committee. During the Lafayette Leadership Campaign, he chaired the Philadelphia Regional Campaign. He has served multiple times as the Class of 1964’s Reunion chair. In 1989, on the occasion of his class’s 25th Reunion, he led his class to a record-setting class gift.
Rubin and his wife, Lorraine, were inducted into the Societe d’Honneur in 1999. Their gifts have benefited major construction projects at the College, including the modernization of the Acopian Engineering Center. Rubin Hall, a student residence, is named in their honor. They also contributed to the endowment to create the Arthur J. ’55 and Barbara S. Rothkopf Professorship in Art History and Scholars Program.
The Rubins’ ties to Lafayette also include sons Timothy Rubin ’88 and Daniel Rubin ’92 and daughters-in-law Lisa Kiziuk Rubin ’89 and Kristen Glauda Rubin ’92.
Rubin is vice chairman and a trustee of Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, Philadelphia, Pa. Prior to becoming vice chairman in 2004, he had served as president and secretary, PREIT Services LLC and PREIT-RUBIN Inc., the company’s property development and management businesses, since 1997.
Rubin earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering and a bachelor of arts in geology at Lafayette. From 1965 to 1970, he served in the U.S. Army as a company commander with the 92nd Engineers in West Germany and with the 577th Engineers in Vietnam, rising to the rank of captain and earning the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal.
Rubin has served since 2004 on the Veterans’ Advisory Committee on Education, which advises the U.S. secretary of veterans affairs. He is the former treasurer of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee.
