Amy Emerick ’03 (Loudonville, N.Y.) is quickly climbing her way to the top of Capitol Hill. After graduating summa cum laude with a government and law degree a semester early, she took a staff assistant position with Rep. Raul Griljalva (D-Ariz.) and has already been promoted to scheduler.

“This is something I’m really excited about,” she says. “I’ll be interacting a great deal with other offices and politicians, scheduling the congressman’s day-to-day activities.”

Emerick also will supervise office interns, draft correspondence, and work closely with the Congressman and other Democratic leaders. An internship with Rep. Peter Deutsch (D-Fla.) prepared her for such an important role in the political arena.

“During my internship with Rep. Deutsch, I served as a staff assistant, performing many of the same tasks I do now for Raul,” says Emerick. “My internship was a great opportunity to see how things operate, and it gave me an edge when applying for jobs.”

She also helped launch a coalition promoting a free-trade agreement between the U.S. and Australia during an internship with the lobbying firm Wexler and Walker Public Policy Associates in Washington, D.C. She worked under the guidance of Peter Holran ’87.

“The professors at Lafayette are amazing,” says Emerick, a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha national political science honor society. “They really reach out to students, and so do the Lafayette alumni, who helped tremendously with my job search.”

Emerick was a member of Lafayette Leadership Institute Committee; the Spanish and government and law honor societies; and Order of Omega, the Greek honor society. She was captain of the cheerleading squad and served as risk manager, efficiency chair, and rush counselor for Pi Beta Phi sorority.
