Grading, site improvement, and foundation work are well under way at the site of the new student residence complex on Sullivan Lane.

The complex will consist of four separate living units surrounding a grass quad. Two of the buildings, with 80+ beds each, will be mainly for upper-class students. They will feature four-person suites with semi-private bathrooms and kitchenettes. Each suite will have its own living area, and there will be one common living/meeting room.

Another building, for first-year students, will have about 90 beds. It will have double rooms with a common bathroom. On each floor, two groups of students will each have their own shared living space. The lower level will include a faculty apartment and a common room opening onto a terrace overlooking the quad. The fourth building, for special living groups, will have about 50 beds.

The complex, totaling $29 million, will also include a 336-vehicle parking deck, due for completion next spring. It is expected the residences will be ready for occupancy in fall 2005.

Sullivan Lane will be open for the convenience of students and parents during move-in weekend. After that it is expected to be closed through fall term and beyond.

Because of the project, areas that formerly accommodated parking for about 200 student vehicles are no longer available for that purpose. To offset this, Lafayette has leased parking space in Forks Plaza shopping center on Sullivan Trail in Forks Township. The College’s new shuttle-bus system will include frequent daily stops at the Forks Plaza student parking location.

The residences were designed by RTKL Associates, Inc., of Baltimore. Turner Construction Co. is construction manager for both the residences and the parking deck.
