Economics and business major Daniel Rosenblum ’06 (Needham, Ma.) completed a semester-long internship with the Patriot League collegiate athletic conference, merging his interest in sports with hands-on experience in marketing.

As a sports administrator he worked alongside six employees and several student interns. His supervisor, Michael S. McFarland, associate executive director of the Patriot League, says that Rosenblum, who helped plan and run the league’s men’s basketball media day, was a good fit.

“There is not a defined job description,” says McFarland. “The duties change daily and include top-level functions.

“Although the topic of the internship was not specifically a part of my major, many elements were integrated,” Rosenblum says.

He says the opportunity provided him the experience of being part of the work force, with main responsibilities involving event planning, media relations, and sports information relations. For example, he researched how member schools represent the league on their web sites and updated the league’s record books when new records were set.

Rosenblum is interested in pursuing a career in marketing or public relations after graduation, and he says that he gained insight into how collegiate athletics work.

“I didn’t pick an internship with the Patriot League with any career aspirations in mind, but it helped me find a focus for my career,” he says. “I think the internship program is a hidden treasure at Lafayette.”

“I hope that Dan left the internship with the Patriot League having a better understanding of the‘behind the scenes’ environment that is intercollegiate athletics and that he developed a few new skills for his professional development,” McFarland says.

He says that Rosenblum’s strong performance in the Patriot League office mirrored those of previous Lafayette interns.

“Lafayette College continues to provide the Patriot League with talented and very capable interns,” he says. “The quality of individuals and work that they have completed while interning at the Patriot League has been exceptional.”

Rosenblum performs in Lafayette’s Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Combo, plays club volleyball, and belongs to Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He graduated from Needham High School.
