Lafayette honored more than 100 students who attained outstanding academic success and recognized students invited to become members of Phi Beta Kappa at the annual All-College Honors Convocation, April 30 in the Williams Center for the Arts.
The keynote speaker was Edward D. Wetzel ’74, executive vice president of Water and Waste Resources, R.W. Beck, Inc., Nashville, Tenn.
Diane Cole Ahl, chair of the Academic Progress Committee and Arthur J. ’55 and Barbara S. Rothkopf Professor of Art History, opened the ceremony, followed by remarks from President Daniel H. Weiss.
Prizes were awarded by J. Ronald Martin, chair of the Subcommittee on Honors Convocation and professor of chemical engineering; and Rose Marie L. Bukics, Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Professor of Economics and Business and acting dean of studies. Provost June Schlueter provided the closing remarks.
Wetzel earned a B.S. in civil engineering from Lafayette, and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Lehigh University. During his 30-year career, he has served in academic, technical, project, marketing, and consulting roles for the water, wastewater, and environmental fields, and as an instructor and assistant professor of civil engineering at Lafayette. While at Lafayette, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi and received the Outstanding Civil Engineering Student Award from the Lehigh Valley Section of the ASCE. He is the recipient of the Clifton P. Mayfield Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
