Students, faculty, staff, and alumni will once again join together to help community service organizations when Lafayette holds the fifth annual Lafapalooza April 13-14.
“Lafapalooza is a great way for students, faculty, staff, and alumni who can’t commit to a weekly volunteer schedule to get involved with the community,” says Amber Zuber, assistant director of the Landis Community Outreach Center. “We hope that Lafapalooza will encourage everyone participating to pursue more community involvement on a more permanent basis.”
This school year, both the Office of Alumni Affairs and Landis Center have branched out, expanding the network of volunteering alumni beyond the Lehigh Valley chapter. They are inviting alumni from the Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, South Jersey, North Jersey, Delaware Valley, and Connecticut area chapters, and any other chapter leaders who express interest, to take part in the community service weekend. Alumni Affairs hopes the program will grow to include more alumni chapters with each passing year.
Mary Pat Staats and Autumn Leciston Bragg ’90, both associate directors of alumni affairs, and Jamie Hughes ’05, assistant director of alumni affairs, will work with alumni chapter leaders to help identify and spearhead community projects in their areas. The Landis Center will continue to work closely with the Lehigh Valley chapter.
The Landis Center has provided community service links from around the country to help direct chapter leaders when choosing projects for their communities.
“Our alumni, students, faculty, and staff are immensely talented. Together, they can strengthen their communities by providing a wide array of services through their volunteer efforts,” says Sherri Jones, director of alumni affairs. “It will also provide a wonderful opportunity for our constituents to work side by side in serving the needs of the community.”
Last year nearly 100 local alumni, students, faculty, and staff participated in 11 projects at various locations in Easton. Volunteers had the opportunity to tutor students at Paxinosa Elementary School; cook a meal at Safe Harbor; paint murals at Union Community Center or Easton Nursing Center; help with general yard work and cleaning at the Newman House, SPCA animal shelter, Third Street Alliance, and Firth Youth Center; work with children at the Easton Area Community Center; or participate in various activities at Arc of Northampton County (a resource center for individuals with mental disabilities) and Salvation Army.
