Laneta J. Dorflinger ’75, distinguished scientist and vice president at FHI 360, based in Durham, N.C., received the Kidd Award for distinction in her career. She oversees programs that are focused in their purpose, empowering in their approach, and global in their impact. Devoting much of her career to broadening “availability and access to new contraceptive technologies for women in low-resource, developing countries,” she overcomes structural, logistical, and economic barriers to directly transform lives.

Dorflinger served on Lafayette’s Board of Trustees from 1988 to 2003, when she was named emerita. She received the USAID’s Science and Technology in Development Award and has been featured in the Global Health section of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s “Impatient Optimists” blog, focused on individuals committed to addressing urgent problems. A chemistry graduate, she earned her Ph.D. from Yale and completed post-doctoral work at Harvard’s School of Public Health.

The award is named for Lafayette’s first graduate, George Washington Kidd, Class of 1836.

The Bell Award was presented to Pamela Gaary Holran ’88 for distinguished service to the College. On July 1, she concluded her two-year term as president of the Alumni Association and board associate, following a five-year term as an alumni trustee, 2005-06 through 2009-10, during which she was a member of the board’s Committee on External Affairs. She has held numerous other alumni leadership positions including president of the Washington, D.C. Alumni Chapter. She has mentored undergraduates and currently serves on the committee that is guiding the search for Lafayette’s 17th president.

A former associate in the communications and engineering law firm Lukas, Nace, Gutierrez & Sachs, Washington, D.C., she holds a J.D. degree from George Washington University. In 1999 Holran won the Greenip Award in recognition of her superb performance as an alumni chapter officer. Four years later she received the Mayfield Outstanding Young Alumni Award, and in 2007 a Special Commendation Award from the Alumni Association for her exemplary loyalty and commitment to the goals of the College and its Alumni Association.

A history graduate, she was president of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority as an undergraduate.

The award is named in honor of Joseph E. Bell ’28, who retired as alumni secretary in 1968.
