The College’s newest academic facility is named for Trustee Emeritus Walter ’59 and Kate Scott in appreciation for their generous support of student and faculty achievement

A dedication ceremony for Scott Hall, the College’s newest academic facility, will be held 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23.

The Office of Dean of the College moved from Markle Hall to its new home in the distinctive Georgian Revival-style building before the start of the current academic year. The deans and directors on the staff administer a range of programs that support students’ academic success and underscore the College’s commitment to intellectual integrity and achievement. In addition, the office coordinates the study-abroad program and assists students who have an interest in pursuing careers in either the legal or health professions or in applying for fellowships and awards. The building also houses Lafayette’s new Center for the Integration of Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship, which fosters conversations about pedagogy and serves as a catalyst for curricular innovation.

Scott Hall is named for Trustee Emeritus Walter Scott ’59 and his wife, Kate Scott, in appreciation for the special generosity with which they have supported student and faculty achievement. Under the guidance of KSS Architects LLP of Philadelphia, the building, constructed in 1907-08 by the Pennsylvania Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, has been transformed into a 21st century facility. The conversion combined standard historic renovation practices with state-of-the-art sustainable-design initiatives. As a result, the building’s exterior appearance remains largely unchanged while the interior layout has become more flexible and the facility as a whole is significantly more energy-efficient.

The dedication will feature remarks by Walter Scott. Also speaking will be Alan R. Griffith ’64, chair of the Board of Trustees; President Daniel H. Weiss; Hannah Stewart-Gambino, dean of the College, and Alan W. Childs, professor of psychology and the founding director of the Center for the Integration of Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship.

The ceremony also will include a video presentation on the College’s Academic Tutoring and Training Information Center, known as ATTIC. It will be followed by a reception and open house at 5:15 p.m.

A civil engineering major at Lafayette, Walter Scott earned graduate degrees from the University of Illinois and Yale. He held key positions with several major corporations and now serves as chairman of the board of Assured Guaranty Ltd. in Bermuda. A Lafayette trustee from 1988-2006 and now a trustee emeritus, he chaired the board’s Committee on Financial Policy from 1991-01 and from 2004-06.

Kate Scott is a graduate of the Easton Hospital School of Radiological Technology and Kutztown State University.

Scott Hall was given by the Scotts in memory of Walter Scott’s parents, Ruth Hawkins Scott and Charles Lukens Scott. Their other gifts to the College have included a scholarship fund that provides financial assistance to Marquis Scholars and an endowment that supports the Marquis Distinguished Teaching Awards that are presented to four outstanding members of Lafayette’s faculty each spring.  The Scotts have been members of the Marquis Society for more than 25 years and were inducted into the Société d’Honneur in 2000.
