Lafayette Opens 2013-14 School Year

Lafayette officially opened the 182nd academic year with Convocation ceremonies Sunday. In a new tradition, students from all class years were invited to attend.

This was the first Convocation presided over by Lafayette’s new president, Alison Byerly. During her welcoming remarks, Byerly also began a new tradition of sharing the College’s sword of the Marquis de Lafayette with the incoming class as a “symbol of the power of the Lafayette legacy.”

Classes begin today for both new and returning students.

    Very impressive opening remarks. Her remarks regarding a collective self say a lot about who we are. We may disagree, but we embrace engagement. We should reject the political in favor of honest debate. We cherish our friendships and tolerate honest differences. As alumni that’s what we hope for and expect and it’s what we will support with out talents and treasure. We need to remind ourselves of our history and the commonality of experience at Lafayette and why that stirs passion in our alumni.
