Kevin Mandia ’92
Founder and CEO of Mandiant cybersecurity company, Kevin Mandia ’92 has been recognized internationally for his firm’s report revealing that a military unit in China’s People’s Liberation Army was responsible for numerous cyber attacks on American corporations, organizations, and government agencies.
The news was reported last year on the front page of The New York Times and in other major newspapers around the world. He was featured on the cover of Fortune in July.
FireEye, a provider of security software, has purchased Mandiant in a deal worth more than $1 billion based on the current value of shares in FireEye, according to a Jan. 2 New York Times article.
The merger of the two companies, one that detects breaches of computer systems and the other that responds to attacks, could make it a competitor with antivirus giants like Symantec and Intel’s McAfee, the article reports.
Mandia, who founded Mandiant in 2004, is the chief operating officer of the merged firms. David G. DeWalt, FireEye’s chairman and chief executive, ran McAfee before it was sold to Intel in 2010.
A computer science graduate, Mandia is co-author of Incident Response: Investigating Computer Crime and articles for The International Journal of Cyber Crime. He has been featured on CNN’s “Talkback Live” as well as news programs on NBC, CBS, and Fox.
