This year’s Commencement celebration featured a revamped Baccalaureate service, which included several original senior reflections through music, film, poetry, and prose.

  • Elizabeth Anderson, from Madison, N.J. (A.B., English and art), presented her piece “Our Lafayette.”
  • Rose Bayer, from Glastonbury, Conn. (B.S., neuroscience), read “A Letter to Marquis de Lafayette.”
  • Carlos Barata, from Bethlehem, Pa. (A.B., music and anthropology & sociology), performed his song “Far At All.”
  • Peter Berexa, from Pittsburgh, Pa. (A.B., psychology and anthropology & sociology), presented his piece “A Speech on Faith Never Delivered.”
  • Shehtaz Huq, from Dhaka, Bangladesh (A.B., English), read “Where Are You Going?”
  • Shanequa Lassiter, from New York, N.Y. (A.B., women’s and gender studies); Jenny Mena, from Bronx, N.Y. (A.B., Africana studies and psychology), Kahmia Moise, from Jamaica, N.Y. (A.B., English); and Abenezer Solomon, from Brooklyn, N.Y. (A.B., government & law and anthropology & sociology), presented a spoken word and percussion performance called “Tongues and Hands Untied.”
  • Alyson Shumeyko, from Vestal, N.Y. (A.B., English and film & media studies), and Erin Elizabeth Townley, from Circleville, N.Y. (B.S., neuroscience), sang “Pie Jesu” by Andrew Lloyd Webber, while Kok Thong Wong, from Kuantan, Malaysia (A.B., music and theater), accompanied them on keyboard.
  • Joel Vargas, from Bronx, N.Y. (B.A., film & media studies and international affairs), presented his film “The Mohican Project.”

President Alison Byerly, Alex Hendrickson, chaplain of the College and director of religious and spiritual life, and Robert Weiner, Jewish chaplain and Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Professor of History, gave remarks.
