Three Lafayette students will play key roles in the seventh annual Undergraduate Conference in Women’s Studies from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Haupert Union Building, Moravian College. The event is sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC) Women’s Studies Coalition.

Seniors Katie Neligan and Annie Todd will participate in a panel on sexism in popular culture from 10-11 a.m. Neligan, a psychology major from Wyckoff, N.J., will speak on “Questioning Conformity.” Todd, a government and law major from Kalamazoo, Mich., will speak on “Hey Guys! Why Aren’t You Insulted?”

Senior Kira Stackhouse, an art major from Easton, Pa., will present a keynote performance entitled “Amerkira” during lunch, 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Three Lafayette faculty members are among faculty and administrators from LVAIC schools moderating the conference. They are Deborah Byrd, associate professor of English and coordinator of Women’s Studies; Elizabeth W. McMahon, professor of mathematics; and Michelle C. Geoffrion-Vinci, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures.

The conference will include eight panels. They are Reconsidering Women’s Roles Through Literature (with papers on F. Scott Fitzgerald, Emerson, Alcott, and Colette), Sexism in Popular Culture, Global Feminism, Creative Self-Expression, Strength in Solidarity (a black women’s group and surviving the Holocaust), Exploding the Genre (homosexual theory and fairy tales), Living within Limits (orthodox Jewish women and medieval stereotypes of women) and Critical Reflections on Parenting.

The conference gives undergraduates at LVAIC institutions and Albright College in Reading the opportunity to share creative and scholarly work they have done in the field of gender studies with their peers and professors. Twenty presenters represent a variety of majors and are doing women’s studies work in a number of disciplines.

The cost to attend the conference is $5, which includes lunch.

In addition to Lafayette, LVAIC members are Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, and Lehigh University.
