The Choral Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania presented Through Our Eyes, a new Broadway revue commissioned from Lafayette College Theater director Michael O’Neill, on May 19 at Wyoming Seminary Lower School in Forty Fort, Pa. and on May 20 at Lackawanna Junior College in Scranton, Pa.

Through Our Eyes was commissioned by the Choral Society for its youth ensembles. The production deals with the roles played by Jews in the creation of the Broadway musical, as well as the prejudice and stereotypes that they encountered.

“Through Our Eyes is an attempt to explore in words and music how the variety of the Jewish American experience influenced the Broadway musical and how this one minority group – whether on the lower East side, in midtown rehearsal studios, on the road in New Haven and Baltimore, or in the back of a Broadway theater pacing nervously on opening night – helped shape the way all Americans, through popular songs and unforgettable characters, have defined themselves,” stated O’Neill in Citizen’s Voice.

The Broadway revenue was performed in conjunction with Brundibdr, an opera about children battling an evil organ grinder.
