Free dance lessons will be available during three Merengue Thursday events, part of Lafayette’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. No reservations are necessary.

Sponsored by the Hispanic Society of Lafayette, Merengue Thursday will take place 7-8:30 p.m. Sept. 20 and 27 and Oct. 4 in the group exercise room on the second floor of Kirby Sports Center. Participants will learn how to dance in the salsa, meringue, and cumbia styles.

“It’s not aerobics,” says Carmen Hernandez, Lafayette’s new intercultural development coordinator. “We encourage people to wear their regular clothes — even heels. It’s more of a social event, not a workout. It’s especially helpful for those wanting to go abroad in Latin America or Spain.”

Participants can arrive with a dance partner or be paired up with one at Merengue Thursday.

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place Sept. 15-Oct. 15. More events will be announced as activities and dates are confirmed.
