Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.) has named Michael Higdon '99 legislative assistant and systems administrator. Higdon previously worked as communications director and legislative aide to Rep. Ron Packard (R-Calif.). His new position is policy-oriented, with a focus on issues in transportation, banking, housing, and agriculture.

Higdon has been working on Capitol Hill for two years. A government and law graduate, he says, “Lafayette provided opportunities outside the classroom to experience politics, such as internships and mentoring.” Having taken advantage of those programs, Higdon says he was prepared for the demands of his present position.

“My job is to conduct research, make recommendations, and draft legislation, as well as to prepare congressional responses to decisions that come from the executive branch,” says Higdon. “What's exciting about the job is that I get to work on policy issues with wide-ranging effects. For example, a transportation bill doesn't just affect how people get to work. It involves the environment, labor, funding, and health concerns.”
