The Crew Club concluded its “head” racing season Saturday with good performances by its novice teams at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.

Head races are run with boats starting in single file order and racing against the clock. Saturday’s competition was a 2.5-mile time trial.

The Novice Men’s Eight narrowly missed a top-20 finish, while the novice women barely missed out on the top 10. The novice men finished 21st of 46 boats with a time of 15:03.52.

The novice women passed five boats and clocked a 16:57.06, good for 11th place among 48 boats. The Lafayette women edged out Lehigh University by three seconds after being forced to a dead stop when three boats in front of them collided and blocked the racecourse. Lafayette entered a second novice women’s eight in the event that passed one boat en route to a 33rd place finish.

The varsity crews also turned in strong performances and the varsity women rowed a lightweight eight in addition to the club eight event. The lightweight eight finished ninth of 11 boats, but defeated Patriot League rival Bucknell University by 14 seconds.
