Cocaptain of the men's basketball team during his senior year at Lafayette, Raphael Chillious '96 went on to play professional basketball in Italy and Spain. He has now returned to his high school alma mater, West Nottingham Academy, as a coach, teacher, and counselor. His goal is to move the basketball program to a position of national prominence. His presence has attracted several top recruits to the Maryland prep school, which is the nation's oldest boarding school.
Hired as middle school counselor, Chillious finds that many of West Nottingham's high school students feel comfortable seeking advice from him as well. He teaches psychology and beginning Spanish-his first official tour of duty as a classroom head teacher. “Lafayette definitely prepared me to set high standards in the classroom,” he says.
Chillious, a psychology graduate, is finishing his master's degree in coaching studies and sports psychology at Victoria University, British Columbia. Next summer he will complete his coursework and master's thesis project: an individual basketball skills development manual to be submitted to the NBA.
“All that's in the manual I do here with my team,” says Chillious. “I'll have five or six players going to Division I teams next year. Building a nationally known basketball program will take time-it's a long-term goal-and we'll do it while putting academics first.”
