In November, Wallace R. Cooney '85 was elected controller of The Washington Post Company, based in Washington, D.C. He was former director of consolidation accounting and financial reporting at Gannett from July 1997 to October 2001. From 1994 to 1997 he was a senior manager at Price Waterhouse LLP, which he joined as a member of the audit staff in 1985.

Cooney, of Alexandria, Va., is an economics and business graduate and certified public accountant.

The main operations of this diversified media and education company include newspaper and magazine publishing, television broadcasting, cable television systems, electronic information services, and educational and career services.

The company owns The Washington Post, The Gazette (Maryland), The Herald (Everett, Washington), Newsweek, Newsweek International, television stations in Detroit, Houston, Miami, Orlando, San Antonio and Jacksonville, and cable systems serving subscribers in midwestern, western, and southern states.
