Newly appointed superintendent of the Glen Rock, N.J., school district, Patrick J. Fletcher '82 chose a career in education administration at least partly due to the influence of Jim Lennertz, associate professor of government and law. “I thought I was going to law school,” says Fletcher. “Prof. Lennertz told us he had been in private practice as an attorney but decided he saw more value in teaching. I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but I knew you didn't have to do everything for money.”
Fletcher joined the 2,200-student Glen Rock district in 1992 as business administrator and served for three years as assistant superintendent for business and school board secretary. He previously held administrative positions in the Rutherford, Closter, and Englewood Cliffs, N.J., school districts.
A priority for the Glen Rock school district is to undertake major renovations to four elementary schools. Fletcher says he will listen to the teachers throughout the process. “Teachers are in the classroom every day; they know what works,” he says. “And they see that I have a varied background-that I think outside the box. It adds to the enterprise.”
A government and law graduate, Fletcher earned an advanced degree in school administration in 1987 from Seton Hall University. He has been a CPA since 1997.
