Elizabeth Westgate ’01 has published an article with Joseph P. Sherma, professor emeritus of chemistry, entitled “Analysis of the active ingredient meclizine in motion sickness tablets by high performance thin layer chromatography with desitometric measurement of fluorescence quenching,” Journal of Chromatography & Related Technologies, vol. 24, no. 18, pp. 2873-2828, 2001.

Westgate, who graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, completed the research with Sherma as an EXCEL Scholar last spring. She also conducted research with William Miles, associate professor of chemistry, and Robert Allan, associate professor of psychology, as well as enrolling in a summer internship program at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. Her research at Lafayette resulted in several published papers.

Last fall, Westgate began working toward her Ph.D. in pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. At Lafayette, she received the American Chemical Society Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry and the J. Hunt Wilson ’05 Prize in Analytical Chemistry. She was a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon. She was a teaching assistant in general chemistry, volunteer tutor, and treasurer of Lafayette crew.
