Stephen E. Lammers, Helen H.P. Manson Professor of the English Bible, will speak on “Is the ‘War’ in Afghanistan a Just War?” noon-1 p.m. today in Interfaith Chapel, Hogg Hall.

Sponsored by the Chaplain’s Office and Newman Association, the event is free and open to the public. Lunch may be brought or purchased for $3.

Lammers will discuss the application of the Just War tradition to the conflict in Afghanistan. He spoke on the topic last month at a meeting of the Society of Christian Ethics in Vancouver, Canada. He will raise such questions as “Is the U.S. action against Afghanistan a war? Is President Bush demonizing Osama bin Laden? What is our responsibility for the actions of our allies? Have we approached the war as a morally serious enterprise? What is the peace that we seek? What are we going to do to bring it about?”
