AirGate PCS, Inc. has appointed James W. Akerhielm '86 to its board of directors. He brings over 16 years of senior management experience in the telecommunications industry to AirGate and will serve a term that expires at the annual meeting of shareholders in 2004.

Akerhielm is president and chief executive officer of NewSouth Communications, a regional competitive local exchange carrier in the southeastern United States that operates in 29 markets and generates $150 million in annual revenue. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of a wireless telecommunications company, Triton Cellular Partners, L.P. During his tenure at Triton, he led the acquisition of three contiguous RSA markets covering over 2.4 million POPs. In addition, he served in various senior management positions with Bell Atlantic Mobile.

Akerhielm earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He holds an Executive Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He serves on the board of the United Way of Greenville, South Carolina, and is a member of the Steering Committee for the Carolina Crescent Coalition.

AirGate PCS, Inc. is the Sprint PCS Network Partner with the exclusive right to sell Sprint's PCS products and services in territories within seven states in the southeastern and mid-western United States.
