The summer after her first year, when Vicki Salemi '95 “simply couldn't wait to get back to Lafayette,” she began jotting down her college memories. “At first it was a memento just for me. I was so excited about how things had changed–how I had changed.”

Salemi's memory book grew and evolved along with her undergraduate experience. Eventually she broadened the manuscript to document student life at big and small, city and residential campuses. The result is her first book, The ABC's of College Life, published this year by Writers Club Press. In this comprehensive dictionary of “college-speak,” she defines over 500 college terms and recounts traditions, tales, and pranks from a variety of schools. Also included is a workbook for readers to keep track of their own campus experiences. The book is available from amazon.com.

“I learned so much about the publishing industry by networking with authors, including some absolutely wonderful alumni,” says Salemi. “I used the Alumni News to track down writers. Every single one of them got back to me and gave suggestions.”

In her spare time, Salemi freelances for College Bound magazine and www.Go-Girl. com, writing about a dozen articles a year. She recently interviewed Arlina DeNardo, Lafayette's financial aid director, for a feature, “Inside a Financial Aid Office: What Happens after Your Forms Are Filed?” Salemi herself was interviewed for inclusion in Girlwise, an upcoming book of empowerment advice for teen girls.

A psychology graduate, Salemi works in international human resources for KPMG. She handles the financial and internal operations for her department, and manages the group that handles placement for rotational positions in and out of the United States.
