Senior Kerry Cordova (Wantagh, N.Y.), a double major in history and religion, is polishing her skills as a historian through an internship at Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society in Easton.

Under the direction of Colleen Cunningham Lavdar, the Society’s executive director, Cordova is earning credit toward her history major by researching Jacob Nicholas House, an edifice that dates back to colonial Easton. Her work will help the Society prepare a grant proposal that would convert the building into a hands-on museum for children.

“I decided to do this internship because I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to learn about the history of Easton and decide on a career path,” says Cordova. “I really like the fact that I am able to learn outside the classroom in a non-traditional fashion.”

Lavadar says Cordova will get a great deal of museum experience and have the opportunity to tackle grant writing.

“Kerry is interpreting the Nicholas House,” says Lavdar “By looking at the whole picture, she’ll determine the resources needed to make the operation run smoothly, including artifacts to display, people resources, and computer needs.”

She adds, “It is great to work with young people who have fresh ideas. Kerry has been a tremendous help. We have been talking about getting the Nicholas House up and running for a long time, and it’s nice to see work being done on the project.”

Cordova traveled to Florence in May to take a special Lafayette course, Florence: Birthplace of the Renaissance. She had the opportunity to explore the city and its monuments, architecture, art, and literature. While in Italy, Cordova traveled to Pisa, Siena, Assisi, Venice, and Rome.

A member of the varsity track team, Cordova is secretary/treasurer of Panhellenic Council and a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
