Marquis Scholar Robert Czarnecki (Hamilton, N.J.), a senior electrical and computer engineering major, is working on an honors thesis that seeks to improve the effectiveness of computers.

Under the guidance of Ismail Jouny, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, Czarnecki is simulating a wireless communication system capable of transmitting audio, data, and video by using an antenna array. The collection of antennas helps reduce interference and noise and deals with imperfections in amplifiers and other electronics.

The project is expected to create more effective wireless Local Area Networks (LANS), networks that share data among several single-user workstations or personal computers.

“Rob will learn a lot of communication systems,” says Jouny. “He will discover how research is done, the pain of things not going as expected, and the thrill of doing something successfully. He will have a unique opportunity to improve his communication skills and his technical writing skills.”

Jouny adds, “Rob is dedicated, motivated, and a good student. He knows the underlying theory and some of the software needed to complete the study.”

During the January interim session between regular semesters, Czarnecki worked on EXCEL Scholars research with John Nestor, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. He helped write a Java program that shows how data flows through a file. In EXCEL, students work with faculty on research while earning a stipend.

Czarnecki will take the LSAT’s in October and is considering a career in law or signal processing, an engineering field that piqued his interest.

Czarnecki is president of Interfraternity Council, serving as liaison between fraternities and the larger campus community. He runs meetings of fraternity presidents, registers events with Lafayette administration, and helps organize bid day and rush.
