Lafayette College Student Government

October 3, 2002

An official meeting of the 2002 Student Government was held in the Farinon Center, Room 12 at 7:05 p.m. There were 15 members present.

I. President’s Report – Morgan Albus
A. MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM SEPTEMBER 26.

B. Student Government received a thank you card from the President of the HSL Club thanking us for our help with Hispanic Heritage Month.
C. Attended the Lafayette/Lehigh Planning Committee and are brainstorming ideas regarding food, the tailgate and perhaps a morning pep rally.
D. The Diabetes Walk is on Sunday, October 6th. All members must attend.
E. Spoke to Dean Worthen and he wants the help of Student Government to bring a sexual misconduct speaker to campus.
F. There is a brown bag panel on Thursday, October 10th at 12:00 p.m. in the Limburg Theater. Pease try to attend.
G. Received a letter from the University of Pennsylvania inviting the government to the Second Annual Mid-Atlantic Region Collegiate Conference on Academic Integrity. Please see me if you would like to attend.
H. The Faculty Compensation Committee is having an open meeting on Tuesday, October 8th at 4:10 p.m. in the Limburg Theater.
I. The government will be having dinner with the Trustees on Thursday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the Marlo Room.

II. Vice President’s Report – Amy Giacobone
A. Emailed Professor Slaght to ask about Student Government’s attendance at Faculty Meetings. Received a response indicating that the President, Vice President, and the Associate Reps are the only students allowed to attend.
B. LEAP spoke at the Faculty Meeting on October 1st and asked for faculty support for recycling on campus. They will be having a meeting on Monday, October 10th at 12:00 p.m. at Gilberts.

III. Secretary’s Report – Alex Karapetian
A. Any member that signs up for office hours must attend. Missed office hours will result in unexcused absences.

IV. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Harris
A. Mens Soccer Club is here to present an emergency allocation.

V. Campus Student Services – Brad Ship
A. Flyers for the shuttle bus have already been sent out.
B. Will put up posters in lower Farinon to advertise them.

VI. Academic Affairs – Jessica Rowlands
A. Drafted a letter to the Head of the Biology Department regarding labs and teacher assistants. Will go over the letter with a professor from the department.
B. Requested student handbooks from various Ivy and Patriot League Colleges to find out about policies regarding class absences.
C. Compiling a list of complaints that students have regarding unexcused absences for legitimate reasons such as Mock Trial and others.
D. Drafted a letter of complaint with changes that should be made and why students feel this way regarding unexcused absences. I am also asking faculty for their input before I finalize the draft to give to Dean Hutchinson.
E. Will meet with the Provost to discuss issues that were raised in tonight’s meeting.

VII. Student Life- Meredith Walburg
A. The drug speaker will be here on Monday, October 7th at 6:30 p.m. at 224 Oechsle. Everyone must attend.
B. Working with Kate on planning the pep rally.
C. F.C.C. meetings will be Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Government office.

VIII. Student Life – Kate Dickie
A. The drug speaker will be here on Monday, October 7th at 6:30 p.m. at 224 Oechsle. Everyone must attend.
B. Working with Meredith to plan the pep rally.

IX. Community Affairs – Lee Goldfarb
A. The Diabetes Walk is October 6th in Allentown.
B. The final Wellness Day meeting is October 9th.
C. The first blood drive committee meeting will be on Wednesday, October 9.
D. The Iraq debate will be scheduled for after Fall Break.

X. Multicultural Affairs – Jenna Menard
A. The Cross Culture Panel will be on Tuesday, October 8th sponsored by the ISA at 12:15 p.m.
B. The Presidential Diversity Speaker will be on Monday, October 7th at 8:00 p.m. in Colton Chapel.

XI. Greek Liaison – Jonathan Cohn
A. IFC Meeting 9/30/02
1. Safe rides are starting on October 9-10. Kappa Delta Rho is responsible for driving the first week.
B. Panhel Meeting 10/1/02
1. College Hill cleanup is 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
2. ALW speaker will be on 10/24/02 at 7:00 p.m. in Kirby.
3. There is a dance party on Saturday night in Farinon from 10:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. with the Hispanic Society.

XII. Elections – Elizabeth Koskinen
A. The Senior Class Council winners are as follow: President, Sam Greenough, Vice President, Carrie Chaitt, Secretary, Jessica Raba, and Treasurer is Kathy Feretti.
B. The Freshman Class Council winners are Rodrigue Alexandre, Colby Block, Kathleen Fox, Thomas Gannon, Rebecca Jackson, Andrew Kasman, Marta Murcrek, David O’Brien, Matt Saybolt, and Brett Warren.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m. These are the official minutes of the Student Government.
