Due to the recent adoption of the International Building Code by the City of Easton, the Easton Fire Department will respond to all automatic fire alarms on campus starting tomorrow. The Public Safety dispatcher will report all alarms received immediately to the Easton Fire Department through the Northampton County Communications Center, according to Hugh Harris, director of public safety at Lafayette.

Previously, Public Safety officers investigated automatic fire alarms to determine their source prior to notifying Northampton County Communications Center. Routinely, the alarms were determined to be false or accidental, and the Fire Department did not respond.

It is important for all members of the campus community to advise Public Safety as soon as possible when the cause of an automatic alarm is known. Given the new policy, it is also important to curtail unnecessary fire alarms.
