Continuing his career representing victims of accidental injury, Keith Evans ’76 has joined Friedman, Sherwin & Scarola in Elmwood Park, N.J. Board certified as a trial attorney by the New Jersey Supreme Court since 1993, he has tried approximately 60 jury trials to conclusion. “Each one was an education in communication and human nature,” he says.

Evans specializes in representing clients injured by toxic substances, in particular young children exposed to lead paint in rundown housing, and more recently, cases involving mold exposure. He has been a member of American Trial Lawyers Association for 20 years and is a member of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, headquartered in Washington, D.C., which is dedicated to providing legal support to causes involving public health, safety, and consumer issues which cannot be pursued, as a practical matter, without their support.

An economics and business graduate, Evans received his law degree from Rutgers Law School, Camden, N.J. “The law courses I took at Lafayette, including Constitutional Law with Professor Klein and Civil Liberties and Law and Society with Professor Lennertz were at the level of first-year law school and were a real boost in preparing me.”

Evans notes that it is ironic that trial lawyers are held in such low regard by the public (an impression, he adds, fostered by big business and big insurance). “Trial lawyers have done more to promote our quality of life, safety, and the environment than most everyone else in the country,” he says. “This is what is so fulfilling and worthwhile in what we do.”
