When asked about the biggest challenge he faces in his new position, Hal Crane ’68 chuckles. “I guess it’s being the only professional in the department who relates to 13 unions and 25,000 unionized employees, and is a trustee of 25 different trust funds,” he says. Crane was promoted in August to vice president, labor relations, Pathmark Stores, Inc. He is responsible for labor relations activities including contract negotiations, grievance administration, labor strategy, and supervision of outside counsel.

“I deal with everything from the most picayune details to matters of national importance,” says Crane.

Crane has worked for Pathmark Stores throughout his career, most recently as litigation counsel in the legal department. An economics and business graduate, he received a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law. “Two courses I took at Lafayette have helped me professionally–Professor Handsaker‘s class on personnel and collective bargaining, and Jack Topio‘s investment class,” he says.

Crane chairs Middlesex County Bar Association’s employment law committee and is master of the bench in the Sidney Reitman Employment American Inn of Court. A former president of Jersey Shore Alumni Chapter, he continues to assist Lafayette as an alumni admissions representative.
