Sometimes, you just have to go with a feeling. And the feeling that Amy McMahon got from Lafayette was of being wanted.

McMahon is a lacrosse addict who wants to play, not just make the team. She’d played for four years – mostly in midfield positions – at the Academy of Notre Dame in Villanova, Pa. So, when the time came to look at colleges, naturally she checked out the lacrosse opportunities.

Her top choices: Lafayette and a large, ivy-league university in Philadelphia whose name begins with “P.” “The other school said, ‘we can’t guarantee anything,’” explains McMahon. “They were recruiting nationally known players and I just knew that the only starting positions would be leftovers.”

At Lafayette, where McMahon met women’s head lacrosse coach Rebecca Joseph, she knew she could be more than a benchwarmer. “I don’t know that I’ll start right away,” she says, “but I know that they want me.

McMahon, who will join the Class of 2007 in the fall, is undecided about her academic future. Medicine is a possibility, but so is law. And she loves English. “I was impressed that Lafayette has such a good medical school acceptance rate,” says McMahon, who monitors the college web site for news about biology research.

“I really like that professors work with students on their research,” she says. “It shows me that students can be involved.”

As a graduate of a small high school, McMahon appreciates the difference that personal attention can make in one’s education. “My dad is a recruiter and he’s always talking about how well-respected Lafayette is,” she says.
