On May 1, Alan C. Woodward ’71 was elected president-elect of the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS). An MMS member since 1983, he was previously its vice president; after serving for one year as president-elect, he will likely become president in May 2004.

MMS represents more than 18,000 physicians and medical students in Massachusetts and publishes the New England Journal of Medicine.

Woodward is chief of emergency services at EmersonHospital in Concord and an

assistant professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Within MMS, he has served on its board, as a member of its House of Delegates, and as a member of task forces on prescription coverage, access to health insurance, and ethical standards in managed care, among others. He has also been active in the national and state chapter of the AmericanCollege of Emergency Physicians, the latter of which has honored him for outstanding service in emergency medicine, for leadership, dedication, and contributions to quality.

At EmersonHospital, Woodward has served as a member of the board of directors and of the medical executive, professional review, and strategic planning committees. He is currently president of the medical staff.

An electrical engineering major at Lafayette, Woodward went on to receive a masters degree in bioengineering from Columbia, then earned his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine.

“Lafayette is where I learned to look at issues logically and formulate solutions,” he said. “My engineering education has been very beneficial both in the clinical and administrative aspects of medicine.”
