Welcome to a new school year and a new edition of the Marquis Mailer, a free, monthly email newsletter that provides you with Lafayette news briefs to keep you up to date with happenings on campus. The mailer highlights activities of all kinds throughout the year, providing links to the College web site where you will find more detailed information on these topics and more. I hope you will take advantage of this convenient way to keep current with Lafayette.

The College’s recent successes have been well documented, but our leadership role among institutions of higher learning means even greater challenges ahead. The support provided by the Lafayette alumni body is second to none, and because of it, Lafayette will continue to excel. An Academic Powerhouse

New Acopian Engineering Center To Be Dedicated Oct. 24
The massive renovation and modernization of Lafayette’s entire 90,000-square-foot engineering complex, now known as Acopian Engineering Center, will be dedicated Oct. 24. The building is named in honor of Easton, Pa., businessman Sarkis Acopian, a 1951 Lafayette graduate, and his wife, Bobbye, for their major gift.

Class of 2007 Excels in Academic Quality
The proportion of students ranking in the top 10 percent of their high-school class is 61 percent, and the mean SAT score is 1270, both all-time highs. The College received 5,835 applications, the most ever, an increase of 6 percent over last year.

Blerta Shtylla ’05 Impresses Math Researchers with National Conference Presentation
Shtylla shared results of summer work conducted with Louis Zulli, assistant professor of mathematics, in National Science Foundation program.

CNN Features Sarah Deitsch ’03
Interview with recent graduate Deitsch led off ”Dollar Signs,” a half-hour program devoted to consumer financial topics, on Aug. 23. Interviewed at her home in Norwood, N.J., Deitsch is working in consumer relations and sales, Giorgio Armani, Manhattan. She received a degree in art and American Studies. Wendy Furrer ’94, an International Affairs graduate working in CNN’s New York bureau, produced the segment..

Homecoming Oct. 24 To Feature Special Events
Homecoming 2003 will include a set of morning faculty lectures beginning at 9:30 in Oechsle Hall, followed by a clambake tailgate on the parking deck behind Markle Hall. The fee of $20 includes game ticket, parking pass for the first 100 registrants, lectures, and the clambake.

New Alumni Directory To Be Published in Spring 2004
Most alumni received a survey in July from Harris Publishing Company, the firm that will produce the new Lafayette College Alumni Directory in spring 2004.This comprehensive volume will include name, address, and phone number, as well as academic data, plus business information and preferred email address bound in a classic, library quality edition. Soon you will receive a postcard inviting you to call to update and/or verify your listing as it will appear. Even if you returned the questionnaire, please call to verify that your information is correct.

Help Students Explore Careers
Alumni are needed to host externships for current students in January 2004. Provide a two- to five-day job shadowing experience for a student considering careers in your field. Regional Phonathons Bring Alumni, Parents and Friends Together

Barbara Rothkopf Appointed to Pennsylvania Commission for Women
Barbara Rothkopf was appointed to the post in August by Gov. Edward G. Rendell. The wife of Lafayette president Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55, she joins 23 other state residents who will serve a two-year term.

Engineers Without Borders Director Meets with Students
Richard Herring’s talk kicked off an effort to start a campus chapter which is being led by David Brandes, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Fidel Maltez ’05, a civil engineering major. The organization helps developing areas with engineering needs and trains a new kind of internationally responsible engineering students.

City Council Approves College Hill Permit Parking Plan
The Easton City Council approved a permit parking plan in July. Permits will be enforced between 2:30 and 6:30 a.m. seven days a week. Two-hour parking for non-permitted vehicles will be allowed around Kirby Sports Center when public events are held there.

New Lampposts Beautify Campus
Twenty-five cast-iron lampposts bearing the Lafayette College seal were recently installed. They are the gift of Alan Brink ’70, president of Spring City Electrical Manufacturing Company, Spring City, Pa., a foundry specializing in traditional crafted-metal lighting systems.

Football Opens Season with 49-0 Win over Marist
Senior quarterback Marko Glavic was 11-of-15 for 226 yards and three touchdowns by halftime as Lafayette downed Marist in the season-opener for both teams.Head Coach Frank Tavani welcomed 29 new Leopards into the football program Feb. 5. Spring practice begins March 29.

Football’s Entire 2003 Season To Be Televised Nationally
All 11 games will air live on the Lafayette Sports Network and on Empire Sports Network, DIRECTV channel 626 and DISH Network channel 432.
